Eduardo Peña Dolhun, M.D.
Founder and Chairman
Eduardo has been volunteering in the US and across the world since his university days at Marquette University. Eduardo earned his medical degree at Mayo Clinic College of Medicine and Science in Rochester, MN in 1996 and completed residency in Family Medicine at the Mayo Graduate School of Medicine in Jacksonville, FL. He also completed three fellowships: UCSF Primary Care Research Fellowship, Northern California Faculty Development Fellowship, and Stanford University affiliated Family Practice Obstetrics Fellowship at Santa Clara County Hospital.
Dr. Dolhun invented and founded Drip Drop ORS in 2008, a patented, third-generation oral rehydration solution that has been used in relief efforts globally. He is the founder of Dolhun Clinic, a private practice in San Francisco. Dr. Dolhun served Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at Stanford University Medical School from 2000-2018, where he was co-director of Ethnicity and Medicine since 2000. Since 2018 he has served as an Adjunct Professor in the College of Health Sciences at Marquette University.
Eduardo has been published in numerous peer-reviewed medical journals. Dr. Dolhun is the recipient of Marquette University’s 2012 Service to the Community Award and the 2017 Mayo Clinic Alumni Association Humanitarian Award.
Eduardo is an active member of the Royal Medical Society, Wilderness Medical Society , American Association of Family Medicine and the Society for Disaster Medicine and Public Health.
Jonathan Jacobs, M.D.
Co-Founder and Board Member
Jonathan Jacobs, MD, has been a strong advocate for universal health care access. He is the founder and chair of Mid America Physicians for a National Health Program. In 2004 Jonathan joined Eduardo in the initial selection and evaluation of the first site and has been fundamental in the development of DOCS. Jonathan received his bachelor's degree from Columbia University and obtained his medical degree from Mayo Medical School, Rochester, MN. He completed a dual residency in internal medicine and pediatrics at the Cleveland Clinic. Jonathan is in private practice in Kansas City, MO. and serves as Clinical Associate Professor at the University of Kansas Medical School and is Co-Medical Director of St. Lukes Hospice. Dr. Jacobs also volunteers for Care Beyond the Boulevard, a non profit in Kansas City, MO that provides healthcare to the homeless and other vulnerable patients through its mobile health clinics.
Dr. Jacobs was awarded for Volunteerism and Community Services in the ACP Laureate Awards in 2006
John (Jeb) Hallett Jr., M.D., FACS
Board Member
Clinical Professor of Surgery, Medical University of South Carolina and Emeritus Professor of Surgery, Mayo Clinic Medical School. Dr. Hallett is a vascular surgeon and the Medical Director of the Roper St. Francis Heart & Vascular Center. Dr. Hallett is board certified in Vascular Surgery and is listed in Best Doctors in America for his expertise in abdominal aortic aneurysms, carotid artery disease, and peripheral vascular disease including renal vascular hypertension.
In addition to his clinical practice, Dr. Hallett is also co-author of the textbook, Comprehensive Vascular and Endovascular Surgery, and also original author of the Handbook of Patient Care in Vascular Diseases. Dr. Hallett speaks frequently in the LowCountry on the topic, “What’s New in Heart and Vascular Health.” A native of Wheeling, West Virginia, Dr. Hallett graduated from the United States Air Force Academy and Duke University Medical School. After completing his vascular surgery training at the Massachusetts General Hospital, Harvard Medical School, he served as Chief of Vascular Surgery at Wilford Hall Air Force Medical Center. In 1984, he joined the faculty at Mayo Clinic where he was a founding member of the Mayo Vascular Center and Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs. In 2001, he was recruited to Eastern Maine Health Care to establish the Vascular Care of Maine Center.
Matthew Hawe
Treasurer and Board Member
Matthew Hawe holds an MBA degree from UC Berkeley and has worked with the Peace Corps in Jordan for two years. He is enthusiastic to continue promoting cultural understanding through Doctors Outreach by uniting his skills in business and international relations with his desire to improve the delivery of health to rural communities worldwide.
Nora Tleel, DDS
Board Member
Dr. Nora Tleel, DDS, MSD, is a board certified pediatric dentist that earned her bachelor of science and dental degree at Marquette University and completed her residency and specialty training at IUPUI and Riley Children's Hospital, Indianapolis, IN. Dr. Tleel practiced pediatric dentistry in her own practice, Toothland clinic, in Amman Jordan for many years and recently moved to reside in the USA. She is the founding member of the Jordanian Pediatric Dental Association and an examiner for the specialty, also a founding member of the Jordanian chapter of the International Women's forum. Dr. Nora relocated to San Diego, CA, where she was the associate program director with UCLA for the pediatric residency program and practices at Point Loma Children’s Dentistry. She is also a consultant for the American board of pediatric Dentistry and a member of the ADA, CDA, AAPD, SDDS, and few other organizations.
Jeffrey Cavaness, M.D.
Board Member
Jeff spent his life pursuing his interest in providing medical care to the underserved, currently practicing in rural Wisconsin as a family physician for Mayo Clinic Health Systems in Tomah, Wisconsin. He serves in-patients in the local hospital as well as out-patients at the local Mayo Clinic facility. He earned his medical degree at Mayo Clinic School of Medicine in 1996 and completed a rural family medicine residency in Pocatello, Idaho.
He has volunteered at international service organization Operation Serve International in Mexico City and locally at St Clare Health Mission Clinic of Sparta, Wisconsin. He is currently serving as chief medical officer (president of the medical staff executive committee) and on the board of directors for Tomah.
Andrew Antes, M.D., M.S.
Board Member
Andrew Antes grew up in the Bay Area and developed an early interest in science and community work on his path to becoming a doctor. He graduated from the University of San Francisco with a Bachelors’ in Biology, and worked as an intern at the Dolhun Clinic from 2015 to 2018, and completed a dual MD/Masters program at Tulane Medical School. He joined Doctors Outreach because he believes the mission embodies his ideals of direct engagement with medical issues both local and international.
Andrew is currently a resident physician at Dignity Methodist Family Medicine Residency Program.
Gabrielle Mouritzen
Research Assistant and Web Designer
Gabrielle completed her bachelor’s degree in Neuroscience with a minor in history at the University of Texas at Austin. As an undergraduate student, she was a peer tutor and volunteered at Ascension Seton Medical Center in Austin, Texas.
Gabrielle was a Dolhun Clinic premedical intern and was involved with Doctors Outreach and DripDrop Hydration.
Kate Brickner
Research Assistant and Community Outreach
Kate is currently a medical student at UTHSA Long School of Medicine. She was a Dolhun Clinic premedical intern, and completed her bachelor’s degree in Biology at Washington University in St. Louis. During her time at WashU, she helped lead Girls Who Code clubs at local middle schools and studied abroad on a Medical Practice and Policy program in Stockholm, Sweden.
